The Fat Pig is a renovated Victorian pub huddled amongst Exeter’s independent shops, and encompasses a smokehouse, a brewery and a small distillery.
Here, the kitchen team is hot on locality, so food miles are kept low and produce comes from Devon’s rivers, rolling moors and breezy coastlines. Rare-breed pork is sourced from Haldon Hill, beef from Moretonhampstead, and lamb is from Langford – they even shoot their own game. These carefully selected ingredients are utilised in dishes such as homemade pork faggots with buttered kale, potato and onion Lyonnaise, and homemade sausage and mash doused in cider gravy from the bar menu. If you’re choosing from the delicious smokehouse menu, opt for the likes of cinnamon and orange crispy smoked duck leg, the English mustard- and honey-smoked pork ribs, or go all out with the chef’s special mixed smoked platter. Although you may not have room, we encourage you to end on a sweet note and savour the molasses sugar cheesecake and spiced rum-soaked fruit.
Equal care is given to the tipple selection, with the pub’s very own beer produced in the experimental brewery in the cellar. Whisky-lovers will discover around 100 single malts behind the bar.
With a quirky conservatory, a lively central bar, and plenty of local food and tip-top brews, there’s always a reason to visit The Fat Pig.
