The George Inn

New owner Linda and her family have recently taken over The George, a 15th-Century traditional inn nestling in the heart of the picturesque village of Chardstock, close to the Devon, Somerset and Dorset borders. The interior is full of olde-worlde charm, with linenfold panelling, large oak beams and stone mullioned windows - there's even graffiti dating back to 1649. Dine in style in the restaurant, or in the bar in front of the welcoming fire. There's also a terraced beer garden for warmer days.

The George has an eclectic menu and supports other local businesses by buying ingredients and produce from nearby farms and producers wherever possible. The options range from traditional favourites like chicken and asparagus pie, succulent steaks and fish and chips, to dishes influenced by Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and Greek cuisine, like lasagne, tagines, moussaka and beef stifado. Complete your meal with a homemade rhubarb and apple crumble or apricot brioche tart. All this is complemented by an extensive wine list and a good selection of traditional local real ales. After one visit to this warm and friendly pub, you'll no doubt feel inclined to become one of the regulars
