The charismatic Grapevine Hotel is conveniently situated in the centre of one of Cotswold's prettiest market towns. Stow-on-the-Wold draws tourists and members of the antiques trade like a magnet. However, if elegant dining at competitive prices in a perfect setting is more your thing, The Grapevine Hotel is unrivalled.

This privately owned 17th-century hotel oozes effortless charm. The staff are dedicated to maintaining high standards and take pride in offering attentive yet unobtrusive service.

Before you dine, linger in the tastefully decorated lounge with attractively arranged plump sofas, and contemplate the delights on the menu. The real star is the La Vigna restaurant: a beautifully light and airy setting, featuring the famous 150-year-old vine, which forms a fabulous canopy overhead and gives the hotel its name. Here, you will find an Italian-influenced menu reflecting precision and flair in equal measure. This is where diners relax and unwind; the subtle background music will soon have you daydreaming about Mediterranean escapes.

I began with a vibrant white crab salad, served on toasted ciabatta with fennel, chilli and lemon, while my partner's platter of Italian cured meats was plentiful and robust, and accompanied by warm, homemade bread. Choosing a main course from the extensive menu was much more diffi cult, with pasta dishes, salads and pizzas jostling for attention alongside classic fish and meat dishes. My masterstroke was choosing the pollo risotto - delicate chicken with porcini, spinach and rice, completed by a blissfully flavoured sauce of mascarpone and pecorino cheese. My partner's hot and spicy pizza, liberally sprinkled with jalapeños, was devilishly fiery, and at just £10 it was satisfying and reasonably priced.

Desserts were exceptional. The chocolate mascarpone cheesecake, with crushed amaretto biscuits and coffee gelato, was heavenly and rich, and the vanilla panna cotta was equally well-executed. The sweetness of the vanilla was perfectly complemented by the tart raspberries and crisp biscotti.

Daytime visitors are able to treat themselves to an enticing lunchtime menu or afternoon tea for a treat. This is especially relaxing when the sun is shining on the terrace. The Grapevine Hotel merits your attention
