In the heart of Cirencester, the Rajdoot is a focus of attention for lovers of Indian cuisine for two outstanding reasons: the quality and variety of the food and the exceptional service provided by the attentive staff. For over 25 years this family-run business has impressed diners in the local area and beyond. With Mr. Raman and his father running the front of house and his uncle in the kitchen, it is easy to understand the secret to the Rajdoot's success.
The restaurant's modest exterior belies the wealth of culinary delights on offer inside. The contemporary decor is cool and sleek and has a splendid feature ceiling and stylish abstract artwork on the walls. Lighting is gently subdued, almost magical, making this a perfect setting for a romantic tryst, family celebration or meeting with friends.
A choice of poppadoms is available, with a wickedly spicy alternative, which definitely must be tried as you mull over the menu. There are 18 starter dishes available here and the stuffed mushroom with spicy lamb (£3.50) and side salad is a very agreeable way to start the evening. For something a little spicier try the sheek kebab of minced lamb barbecued with herbs and spices (£3.75), which delivers an explosion of flavour.
Prepare to linger some time over the stunning array of main courses too - a magnificent 49 dishes, including 21 house specials, are on offer. The wealth of choices includes
tandoori, biryani, and special thali dishes as well as the traditional curries, ranging from the mild to the explosive. The Anar Koli from the chef's special selection is truly unforgettable - a succulent breast of marinated chicken, stuffed with spinach paneer and baked, then served with a delicately spiced, creamy sauce (£8.95). As one might expect from a quality restaurant there is also an impressive range of vegetarian alternatives available. For the undecided or the inexperienced visitor, the chef has also selected complementary dishes to emphasise the subtlety of flavours one might expect from a typical Indian meal.
Don't miss out on the delightful desserts, as this is where the Rajdoot scores highly. Too often Indian restaurants have a very limited range of desserts, but here there is a more than ample, varied selection, modestly priced at £2.50 to £3.50. The refreshing orange or coconut sorbets and the luscious Fantastica (vanilla and caramel ice cream with chocolate balls, toffee pieces and caramel sauce) stand out, with the smooth chocolate mousse also a worthy choice. Several flavours of ice cream, traditional kulfi and the more restrained option of fresh fruits are also available.
If impeccable service and quality cuisine are important essentials when dining out, then this restaurant will undoubtedly appeal - the waiters seem to have a sixth sense and will make you feel the centre of attention. This is a perfect place to relax in sleek surroundings, whilst enjoying an unhurried meal in good company. With a licensed bar,
