Ganesha

Bedminster Parade is a beguiling mix of art galleries, restaurants and car accessory stores just south of the river. As befits this unusual set of bedfellows, Ganesha is far from a standard, common-or-garden Indian restaurant.

Owners Prasad and Mayur come from Hyderabad and Pune, which are two of the most popular Indian cities. Both are very keen to point out that the food they specialise in is very different from the bog-standard style of cooking found in the most common Bangladeshi or Pakistani restaurants. With this in mind, we kicked things off with a very famous Indian starter, masala dosa - a light and fluffy potato-stuffed pancake served with a fresh coconut chutney and sambhar. Working our way further into the menu, we discovered the delightfully mild Alleppy king prawn - jumbo prawns curried with raw mango, coriander and coconut milk - along with the gosht Malabar masala, which consisted of boneless lamb in a warming spiced sauce. The restaurant also specialises in a variety of mouthwatering thalis, which can be delivered at lunchtimes. The side dishes are just as exotic; bright purple in colour with equally deep flavours, the aubergine cooked in peanut, onion and tomato sauce was delicious. Mango and saffron rice dishes completed this culinary journey, and after a genial chat with the ever-friendly owners, we stepped back out onto the street, already thinking of a return visit.
