Behind the pared back, fresh exterior lies first-class eatery Cliff Top Restaurant, situated in the heart of Bournemouth. Run for the past 15 months by owners Mick and Sue, the Cliff Top boasts freshly painted white-washed walls, blackened floorboards and minimalist decor. In this relaxed environment, diners can choose a variety of dishes from the à la carte and set menus, plus a weekly changing specials board. Using locally sourced produce where possible and cooking dishes to order, the Cliff Top's chefs guarantee diners the best in flavour and quality, while attentive waiters cater to your needs. It's the friendly service of both staff and owners that sets this eatery apart. With a soundtrack of soft music and the murmur of content diners, I settled down with my glass of pinot grigio and complimentary olives to await my starter of Wye Valley smoked salmon served with citrus sour cream, shallot and caper dressing and a generous helping of fresh, crusty French bread. Choosing a main course proved difficult, thanks to the delicious range available. Although tempted by the herb and Parmesan gnocchi accompanied by roasted vegetables, I decided to instead plump for something from the specials board. My eye was caught by hake fillet, potato cake and mange tout doused in a white wine sauce. This, like my starter, was thoughtfully presented and showcased a delicious blend of fresh ingredients. Giving in to my sweet tooth and curiosity, I finished with Cliff Top Eton Mess, with a twist - an artistic arrangement of the sumptuously naughty dessert using a Kilner-style preserving jar. It's these quirky touches that make this homely restaurant a haven for those who appreciate good quality food cooked exceptionally well and served with a little pizzazz. The contented murmur turned into an excited buzz as diners discovered (and tasted) their gastronomic gems. If you fancy people-watching on lazy afternoons there's ample seating outside, so whether returning from the sandy beach or enjoying an evening out, be sure to check out the Cliff Top Restaurant
