Occupying an idyllic rural setting just ten minutes from Bath, The Wheatsheaf achieves the best of both worlds. Re-opened last November after a thorough refurbishment, the bright, elegant interior and friendly ambience are irresistibly inviting. With the pub and restaurant separated by a well-stocked bar, this adaptable spot is equally perfect for casual lunches, family gatherings and romantic suppers.
We were seated in a cosy corner for two, which offered delightful views of the Somerset countryside. After a quick perusal of the menu my companion selected a delectable spring vegetable frittata. I couldn’t resist the spiced fishcakes, which were light and fluffy, served with a vibrant mango and pea shoot salad. To follow, my partner enjoyed homemade vegetarian pie, complete with deliciously crumbly pastry and tangy tomato chutney. For me the stand-out dish was my main – a juicy carbonnade of beef braised in beer until it was meltingly tender and full of flavour. To complete the evening we selected two sweet treats from the dessert menu: a rich and boozy rum baba with sweet caramelised pineapple, and an indulgently creamy banoffee pie with lashings of chocolate and caramel. As a spot in which to dine, relax and take in the scenery, The Wheatsheaf is unbeatable and we can’t wait to return.
