Jim Crowe, chef-owner at The Frog at Skirmett, proudly told me how much of his menu is locally sourced from the Hambleden Valley, where this attractive pub-restaurant is situated. Jim and his wife, Noelle, have owned The Frog since 1995 and, if the quality of the meal and service we enjoyed was anything to go by, have established a truly excellent restaurant. I started with succulent beef Carpaccio, while my companion had dill-cured salmon with a light, refreshing celeriac remoulade; the soda bread accompaniment had a deliciously sweet, nutty flavour. This was followed by sea trout with samphire and Hollandaise sauce, and rich, well-seasoned liver and bacon with colcannon. I only just managed to save room for the divine summer pudding made with local fruit and berries by Noelle. The Frog offers a marvellous dining experience in a beautiful location, with overnight accommodation available for those who want to enjoy the cosy environs of this charming period building a little longer.
