Church Road, Swallowfield, Reading, RG7 1TJ

Set in a 17th-century Grade II listed building complete with exposed beams, The George & Dragon is one of Berkshire's finest options for excellent food in a traditional country pub setting. With a large garden offering stunning views of Berkshire's countryside, and perfectly situated for country walks along the Blackwater Valley Path, The George & Dragon really is a rural idyll.
The pub stocks real ales and fine wines to accompany the excellent pub fare. Paul Brotherton, the head chef, takes great care designing a frequently changing menu that utilises home grown local produce wherever possible. As well as offering superb Sunday roasts for just £11.95, the menu is packed with tempting options. To start, opt for the spicy aubergine and Parmesan falafel cakes, served with roast garlic, minted yoghurt and a toasted flatbread, or plump for the warming potted salmon and brown shrimps in a creamy brandy and nutmeg sauce, topped with dill butter. Multiple visits are a must, as the mains include venison and porter sausages with bubble and squeak in a rich gravy, as well as a half shoulder of new season English lamb, slow-cooked for three hours and served with garlic mashed potatoes and rosemary sauce. For dessert, reward yourself for that country walk with an iced chocolate and roasted pistachio parfait, marinated berries and raspberry sorbet. What a perfect way to spend a day
