Set in an elevated position overlooking stunning Berkshire countryside, The Crab boasts a simply idyllic location. Miles of rolling fields surround this restaurant and hotel, yet once inside you might swear you can smell salt in the air. The interior is intimate and comfortable with a distinctly nautical theme - fishing nets hang from the ceiling, and shells and tin boats create a coastal vibe, scattered amongst colourful artwork. Fish arrives from Brixham six days a week and the freshness is unmistakable.
Deservedly the restaurant has been awarded two rosettes by the AA, along with an accolade for being the UK's best fish restaurant, which, given its location approximately 100 miles from the sea, is pretty impressive.
Starting with lobster ravioli, which was served with sautéed spinach and prawn bisque, I was immediately impressed by the brigade of chefs. My companion's king scallops with curried cod brandade was fresh and bursting with rich flavours. Next, our mains were nothing short of sublime. My companion, who is slightly hesitant when it comes to eating fish, became a convert. She declared her main of wild sea bass, served with Irish goat's cheese and an anchovy tart, sheer heaven on a plate. My harissa salmon married with butternut squash, honey and soya was simply irresistible, and the presentation of every dish was impeccable. At this point I should mention the exquisite desserts. I won't spoil the surprise, but the assiette of desserts for two (taster portions) is quite incredible, although you must expect to extend your belt a notch or two afterwards.
The attached hotel boasts differently themed designer rooms - such as Zen, Raffles and Treetops - which are sumptuously decorated and equipped with huge flatscreen televisions; some even have hot tubs for up to eight guests. This all combines to create a pleasure-seeker's playground and encourages some serious relaxation. It is also the perfect setting for weddings - with a honeymoon suite and full use of all the hotel's facilities, The Crab will ensure you have an unforgettable day.
After a truly enjoyable evening at The Crab, we agreed we'd certainly be returning. This must be one of our country's best restaurants and is fast setting a benchmark for others. It is truly excellent and a must for any food enthusiast
