Situated on the outskirts of Maidenhead and commanding scenic views of the river from its comfortable restaurant and bar, this hotel offers a tiny slice of Italy set on the picturesque riverbanks of the Thames. Upon entering Trevi Ristorante Italiano you are greeted by charming, attentive, predominantly Italian staff, who are ready to make your experience as authentic and traditional as possible. Red-brick walls and wood panelling divide the dining room, creating cosy corners for couples seeking a quiet romantic evening, and larger areas for groups to gather round a table over good food and a bottle of something red. Making menu choices is made all the more pleasant when presented, as we were, with a tasty selection of juicy black and green olives, focaccia bread, olive oil and balsamic vinegar, whetting the appetite for the superb choice of antipasti, pizza, pasta and other delights from the grill that were on offer. The wine list is marvellous, featuring bins from the best wine-producing regions of Italy, with each wine proceeded by a helpful description of its character. To start, I opted for the 'marinata di verdure and buffala', a mix of grilled vegetables marinated in balsamic vinegar and served with creamy buffalo mozzarella, perfectly offset by a crisp dressed salad. My partner chose the 'sautée di fungi', and enjoyed a selection of spicy sausage and mushrooms sautéed with balsamic vinegar, served atop crunchy bruschetta slices. 'Tagliolini marinara', featuring fine strands of fettucine cooked with tiger prawns and cherry tomatoes, took my seafoodloving fancy, while my fiancé relished his choice of 'pollo mostarda'. As our evening of enjoying the delights of Maidenhead's own little Italy drew to a close, my partner could think of no better way to end the night than with a dessert of authentic tiramisu; although my large dish of strawberry and vanilla 'gelati' (ice cream) was subject to his wandering fork on more than one occasion. With quality food, bags of charm and more than a dash of elegance, Trevi Ristorante Italiano is the perfect place for those seeking a corner of the Mediterranean in our very own Royal County.
