With its oak beams and inglenook fireplaces, the 600-year-old Woolpack Inn - found off the A28 in the picturesque village of Chilham - offers a glimpse of the hospitality of yesteryear. Alongside a comfortable bar, restaurant and patio courtyard, the inn also boasts 14 well-appointed guest rooms priced at just £80 per night for a double room (£60 during winter) with the option of a full English breakfast; there's also parking for 25 cars. The menu features homemade dishes such as hearty steak and Spitfire ale pie and moreish strawberry shortcake. Many of the ingredients used are sourced locally; fresh fish comes off the boat in the morning and is often on the plate by lunchtime. To wash it all down, perhaps indulge in a pint of locally brewed Shepherd Neame ale or a quality wine from the extensive list. No wonder they were highly commended by the English Tourist Board in the award for the best pub in the South East of England.
