Genting Club Reading, 18 Richfield Avenue, Reading, RG1 8PA
Proudly showcasing talented Michelin-trained chef Jason Barnwell in its Fahrenheit Restaurant, Genting Club is much more than a casino. Picture welcoming staff, a sea of armchairs where you can relax with the extensive drinks list, and a convenient location between leafy Caversham and bustling Reading. Add free parking at the leisure centre opposite.
The quality and artistry of the food were, appropriately, ace. After a gorgeous starter of skilfully seared scallops with crushed fennel seeds, pea purée and crispy pancetta, my companion rhapsodised about the Grangemoor fillet steak, cooked on Genting's charcoal Josper grill. The finest quality meat, seared to lock in juices, was absolute perfection. My pea and asparagus risotto starter was summer-fresh. A masala sea bass main blended subtle spices with tender, drop-from-the-bone fish. I opted for four miniature desserts, including a piquant lemon posset that was unforgettable.
There's no need to be a member of the casino to watch the action at the games tables while you eat. For more involvement, their All In experience packages offer gaming and a three-course meal for £24.95. On Sunday and Monday, until 2am, a Malaysian chef produces Chinese food for only £5. You can also Graze and Play, earning points for your supper as you play. Foodies and poker players, please form an orderly queue
