Becketts has been a well-regarded Southsea fixture for over 30 years, upholding a glowing reputation for exceptional food, drink and service. Conveniently located near the seafront and a short walk from Gunwharf Quays, its current owners took the helm at the start of 2016 and quickly began refurbishing the historic building. Keen to sustain the establishment’s authenticity and character, Becketts’ Grade II listed premises underwent a six-month period of renovation, bringing new life to the restaurant’s four floors. Handmade wooden furnishings, cool marblework, soft lighting and a state-of-the-art kitchen all contribute to a stylish, modern and inviting setting for all manner of occasions. The acquisition of the building next door has meant Becketts now boasts several dining rooms, a well-stocked bar, a private dining room and guest accommodation.
Dining at Becketts is an all-encompassing experience, with all elements taken into careful consideration. The kitchen has perfected its exemplary menu of traditional and modern European gastronomic delights, preparing everything on-site and making seasonal use of locally grown and reared produce to the fullest extent. Starters include baked Camembert and chorizo served with sunblushed tomato focaccia and chilli jam, and monkfish scampi served with lemon and dill tartare sauce. Another starter that exceeds expectations is the pan-seared scallops, smoky bacon and pea risotto finished with chorizo oil. The mains are just as exciting. You might opt for the barbecue pork belly served with a spring onion and potato rosti, charred sweetcorn and green bean salsa, or Thai-style bream fillet accompanied by sticky coconut rice, mango purée, sambal and charred pak choi. A number of innovative vegetarian and vegan dishes ensure that everyone’s well catered for. You can expect to find plates such as homemade basil gnocchi with delicious pesto and red peppers, and the tempting crispy tofu bowl laden with Keralan sweet potato and spinach curry. Desserts are well worth saving room for. Highlights include the pretty mango, passion fruit and white chocolate cheesecake, lemon and poppy seed polenta cake, and spiced pecan and treacle tart.
Sunday lunch is a fine occasion too, with options that include crisp pork belly and roast marinated beef topside with potatoes roasted with garden herbs, seasonal vegetables, and a giant Yorkshire pudding. Booking in advance is advised due to popularity.
