Set in a cosy corner of the New Forest, The Filly Inn welcomes families and friends, couples, little ones and four-legged guests alike with genuine hospitality and warmth. The accommodating team places emphasis on serving quality food and drink, and where possible, everything is sourced from the New Forest itself, or a little further afield from the regions of Hampshire and Dorset. Plenty of cosy corners, exposed woodwork and a large sun-drenched garden blend mellifluously here, establishing a warmly welcoming, countrified atmosphere that instantly puts guests at ease. Children’s games, badminton rackets and skittles are on hand, and a delightful garden is ready and waiting for a light lunch in the summer sun. Pair the above with a night’s stay in one of The Filly’s beautiful letting rooms, which boast stunning views over the Setley Plain, or even pitch a campervan in the inn’s spacious carpark, and you’re bound to agree that this is a venue that really has it all.
From a menu that showcases both exceptional modern British cuisine and a selection of time-tested pub classics, I began with something from the daily changing specials board: black pudding Scotch egg served with a sweet carrot chutney and seasonal salad leaves. My partner chose a generously portioned board of bread, oil and garlic olives. We shared the two starters (reluctantly on my part), and vowed to return again to enjoy them as a light lunch in The Filly’s garden, with the dog in tow.
For my main course, I took the chef’s recommendation of trio of poussin. The dish was packed with complementary flavours, with the ballotine of breast, poussin mousse and confit leg served alongside sorrel, confit potato, leek purée and tarragon jus. My partner plumped for the popular house beefburger, which is topped with pancetta, Stilton, crispy onions and tomato relish, and served in a brioche bun with skinny fries.
After two hearty dishes, there was little room left for dessert. However, never one to pass up my favourite course, we resolved to share apple crumble with vanilla ice cream. With smiles on our faces we promised ourselves that we’d be returning again soon.
