Found in an unassuming position in Lewes, the Limetree Kitchen is a fantastic two-year-old restaurant that's fast becoming one of the most talked about places in town.
Attention to detail, pride and a passion for food are in evidence in every corner of this cosy eatery. Owner Alex focuses on locally sourced, seasonal produce, from every masterfully cooked cut of meat to the delicate edible flowers which adorn the salads. Alex has an enviable excitement for the food he cooks, and this shines through in his meticulous presentation.
The small yet impressive menu changes from week to week and offers a choice of three dishes for each course: a meat, fish and vegetarian option, so that everyone is catered for. Nothing is over-complicated; these are simple flavours brought to life by Alex's light touch. Each ingredient is identifiable and impeccably cooked, so that his food indulges the palate rather than bamboozling it.
We began our meal with a sushi-like starter of smoked salmon, sticky rice, seaweed paper and pickled cucumber. The smoked salmon was silky and fresh, and led nicely to my main course of perfectly creamy roasted butternut and summer squash risotto. It was flavoured with sage, and lifted by the slight sharpness from a beetroot dressing.
Ensure you save room for dessert. With a background as a chocolatier and an ice cream maker, Alex's incredible homemade ice creams and sorbets are like none I have ever tasted. With sorbet flavours such as apple and Mojito, and vanilla and muscovado sugar ice creams, you will be left smiling from ear to ear.
Alex's team certainly know their stuff when it comes to wine too. Offering an exceptional boutique wine list, they will be sure to recommend a drop if you struggle to select your ideal accompaniment.
The sum of all these parts makes the Limetree Kitchen an experience not to be missed
