With an enviable view of ancient Carisbrooke Castle, where King Charles I was held prior to execution, The Waverley Inn is hard to miss and steeped in history. Named after the large paddle steamer that frequents these shores, The Waverley is a large Victorian public house with enough outdoor seating to create a vibrant atmosphere in the summer. On the wet and windy autumn day of my visit, I was greeted by a lovely roaring coal fire and warm hospitality from the staff behind the bar, above which sat a number of antiques all reminding me of a bygone era. A homemade steak and ale pie went down a treat with a pint of real ale - any thoughts of the rain outside were soon banished. You'll find the traditional fare caters for all, with a superb range of menus and prices that will please anyone's pocket. Don't miss the astonishing £3.95 menu, which offers you the chance to eat like a king for the price of a coffee
