Going on an empty stomach would be good advice to anyone heading for the Eight Bells. Just down the road from the quaint village church and its peal of bells that gave the Eight Bells its name, this traditional family pub is legendary for its generous portions, which explains why it has been a firm favourite of islanders and visitors alike for many years. It is the perfect place for a relaxed dinner or Sunday carvery, while spacious enough to cater for large groups or family gatherings. There is plenty of room both inside and out, with a spacious garden overlooking a mill pond, ample parking, and a children's play area. If that is not incentive enough, the free toy with every children's menu always goes down a treat.

The friendly and helpful staff give a warm welcome and are attentive but not overbearing. Landlady Dawn has been there for 18 years, and her many years' experience in the pub trade ensure that it is an efficiently and professionally run venue. You'll often find her chatting with the locals in the bar.

All the food is cooked fresh to order and the service is swift without being hurried. The menu offers a wide selection of home-cooked pub fare, which should cater for everyone's taste. There are also some great alternative dishes on the specials board which add interesting variety. To start I chose the flavoursome golden winter vegetable soup served with fresh crusty bread. I followed this with the peppered tuna steak in a creamy sauce with a crisp and refreshing salad. It went perfectly well with the soft and fluffy jacket potato. The helpful guide on the wine list will help you to find the perfect wine or real ale to go with your meal.

Bring the whole family here on a winter's day to enjoy a hearty meal in comfortable, relaxed surroundings. Well fed and warmed by the fire, you won't want to leave.
