Warmly greeted by Micala and Phil when we arrived at The Fighting Cocks, we were instantly made to feel welcome. The pub itself is beautiful - with heaps of character and smart furnishings, the attention to detail was evident throughout.
As it was a chilly night, we settled at a table beside the wood-burner and thoroughly enjoyed two local ales - although we were equally impressed with the wine list. On turning our attention to the extensive menu, we were spoilt for choice, with a range of homemade fare demonstrating a healthy emphasis on fresh, local ingredients and showcasing produce such as Godshill free-range eggs and duck, as well as Isle of Wight sausages and ham. With all the classics you'd hope for, alongside some more exotic dishes and a children's selection, there's certainly something for everyone. We started with a delicious homemade crab and smoked salmon cake, followed by tender lamb shank with redcurrant gravy and a separate serving of succulent sea bream with a tangy crab and prawn sauce - all wonderfully presented. Enhanced by its buttery almond crust, the lemon tart was a real treat with which to end the meal. With extensive outdoor play equipment to keep the kids amused, this is a great, value-for-money, family pub that I'd heartily recommend.
