Marco Pierre White's Wheeler's of St James's restaurant at The Casa Hotel in Yateley conjures the opulence and grandeur of top fine-dining restaurants, yet is warm, relaxed and pleasingly unpretentious. It's definitely good fortune to be able to sample gastronomy inspired by such a great chef on your doorstep.
The food at Wheeler's is rich and refined; savour the finest foie gras atop sweet brioche with a fried duck egg and a wonderfully piquant jus created with merlot vinegar, or the luxurious cream of cauliflower soup with slivers of smoked salmon. For mains, relish the roast rump of lamb à la Dijonnaise, or succulent roast chicken à la forestière featuring the intense flavour of wild mushrooms and fluffy fondant potatoes. The dessert menu includes classics like lemon tart, sticky toffee pudding and bread and butter pudding, all with a Marco Pierre White twist. Head chef Charles Noorland is understandably proud of and passionate about his cuisine, which he describes as good, honest food at affordable prices. The menu is constantly evolving and he is keen to involve his team in its development.
With such renowned ownership we had high expectations of this establishment, and we can certainly say that it lived up to its reputation. It's no surprise that Wheeler's has been awarded an AA rosette for culinary excellence, and was amongst Toptable's Diner's Choice winners for 'most-booked' restaurants in Hampshire 2013
