The French Horn, located just minutes from the A31, is the perfect venue for lunch or dinner after a visit to Jane Austen's home in Chawton, Gilbert White's Museum or the village of Selborne, or a train journey on the Watercress Line. It has been a public house since the 1700s and boasts a traditional interior with bags of character, as well as three large, well-kept gardens.
The bar area was buzzing with contented chatter, and the aroma of freshly prepared food whetted our appetite as we were escorted through to the newly renovated dining room. Sipping perfectly chilled sauvignon, we marvelled at the extensive menu. I chose a picture-perfect platter of meats, sundried tomatoes, marinated olives and gherkins, while my partner devoured a salad of Barkham Blue, watercress, apple and pink grapefruit, garnished with walnuts. We knew we were in expert culinary hands when our attentive waitress served a beautifully presented salmon fillet with Niçoise salad, and an impressive chicken supreme with Moroccan-herbed couscous and spiced ratatouille. To round things off, we indulged in refreshing raspberry sorbet and a glorious sticky toffee and date pudding with clotted cream.
The classic roast lunch served every Sunday is sure to impress, and can be enjoyed inside or on the spacious terrace if the weather is fi ne. There is also a function room ideal for all manner of events. The French Horn's unforgettable hospitality and service has earned it a four-star rating on TripAdvisor, and, after our visit, two new fans who will be visiting again very soon
