Suburban shopping centres are not generally known for excellent restaurants, but the Royal Dragon bucks the trend - unassuming but exceeding all expectations. The decor is elegantly Oriental without going over the top and the background music is discreetly muted. Royal Dragon moved here from Hinckley, and their secret weapon is a chef from China who has learnt to accommodate English preferences while retaining the integrity of Cantonese cuisine.

Our charming and friendly hostess recommended the special set menu for two (£20 each), which would enable us to sample several dishes from the extensive main menu. To start we had a plate to share, loaded with spring rolls, seaweed, prawn toast, spare ribs in honey and peach syrup and satay chicken on skewers. The flavours were full-bodied with a home-cooked taste that is often missing in Chinese restaurant food. Next came aromatic duck, expertly shredded at our table by our waitress, which we happily rolled up into traditional pancakes.

The portions so far had been wonderfully generous, so we requested the following courses in 'taster' sizes - the accommodating chef was only too happy to oblige. The Cantonese-style fillet steak sizzled temptingly on a hot platter, and the chicken with green pepper in black bean sauce was nicely succulent. Yung Chow fried rice provided a perfect background to all the delicate flavours. We declined to order dessert, but were nevertheless presented with a small dish of fresh oranges and strawberries, which proved an ideal way to end our Oriental dining experience.

Royal Dragon Restaurant offers a full takeaway menu too, and does a brisk trade with locals and visitors at the nearby Travelodge. On Sundays, a special three-course set menu is available from just £9.90 per person, for lunch or dinner. Both the restaurant and takeaway menus can be viewed online, and you can take a virtual tour to see happy customers enjoying their meals. The website will even give you the Chinese horoscope outlook for your sign. What a find - this restaurant is more than worth the short drive out of town.
