The Lee is one of those charming Chiltern villages which seems to be miles from anywhere. At its heart sits The Cock & Rabbit Inn, home to Graziemille Restaurant.
Gianfranco and Victoria Parola have developed this pub and restaurant for 27 years, and serve up Italian home-cooking for lunch and dinner, as well as providing bespoke catering for larger occasions like weddings. The Graziemille premises are breathtaking and feature a terrace, 60-cover dining area and a one-and-a-half-acre garden. We dined in the bar, which is styled like an Italian trattoria, and began with bagna càuda (a hot anchovy dip with vegetable crudités) and formaggio di capra tostado (grilled goat's cheese with toast and salad). For mains we had spaghetti with lobster, garlic, chillies and courgettes, and grilled sea bass with sauté potatoes. Other choices included pasta, steak (such as tournedos Rossini) and vegetarian options. For dessert, we couldn't resist the indulgent tiramisu and the fresh mango with lime. All dishes are freshly prepared by Gianfranco, whose use of wild garlic deserves special mention - Graziemille was one of the first establishments to use this celebrated ingredient.
In an area popular with walkers and tourists - attracted by the beautiful countryside and eager to spot a star from television shows such as Midsomer Murders, which has actually been filmed on the premises - this is an excellent venue in which to spend an evening.
