Offering authenticity accented by modern character, The Shakespeare welcomes diners with a layout which is cosy yet elegant, and a dining experience which is in equal measures comfortable and exquisite. We started with the black pudding and smoked bacon croquettes, which was a delicious dish, utilising locally reared meat. My pulled pork lettuce parcels tantalised with smoky fl avours, and were accompanied by a refreshing slaw. For mains my companion chose the posh fish fingers, which were wonderfully complemented by a light swirl of pea purée. My velvety smooth butternut squash risotto proved the definitive comfort food. A crème brûlée and Marathon Knickerbockerglory provided a truly glorious end to our meal – one which was enhanced by exceptional service and a wine list which is both extensive and impressive.
