Here is the local we should all be so lucky to have. In fact, once discovered, you may be tempted to keep its location all to yourself, ready to whip it out and impress visitors with 'actually - I know this little place'!
This gastronomic hideaway was sympathetically renovated by owners Andrew and Helen in 2006 to create a light yet intimate atmosphere. Gone are the patterned carpets and scumbled walls, replaced by simple decor with a hint of drama. In the winter I cannot imagine anything more satisfying than choosing a robust red from the tantalising wine list and tucking into a meal while the log fire crackles in the background. And what a meal it would be. Preparing dishes in full view of all the diners, the chef shows no sign of pressure in his open kitchen. When our starters appeared it became clear why - someone this accomplished has no call for nerves.
Flavourful homemade bread, conversation-stoppingly tender steak, refreshingly imaginative veggie options, fantastic fishy fare and puds to die for, all presented to the highest possible standard. The quality is a true testament to Sussex producers as, remarkably, everything is locally sourced. In fact, the menu bears today's date, as it isn't printed until the creative chef knows what is freshly available each day. It's fantastically reasonable too, with starters from £4.50, mains from £9.95 and desserts from £4.95.
