Blackfriars Restaurant dates back to 1239, when it served as a refectory for the Dominican friars, and so is unique to the city. Today it offers gutsy, traditional British cooking at its best, which has earned it the title of Best Newcastle Restaurant alongside the Taste of England award in the North East England Tourism Awards.
There's no doubt Blackfriars is a great choice of restaurant in Newcastle, offering fantastic value for money and outstanding cuisine. Blackfriars offers a great value three-course meal with a glass of fizz for £20 from Monday to Saturday, and a special early-diner menu, as well as an impressive à la carte offering. The Sunday roasts have earned the proud owners a nod from readers of The Independent, who voted Blackfriars as serving the best Sunday lunch in Newcastle.
The chefs focus on seasonal produce sourced straight from local farms and markets, serving up a real taste of the North East. The menu boasts starters like rare-breed pork terrine served with cider-pickled onions and a Scotch quail's egg, and main courses like seared Scottish venison served with butternut squash purée, red cabbage and a rich chocolate sauce. Guests can also enjoy al fresco dining in the sheltered cloister garden and the splendour of the adjacent Banquet Hall, which is popular for medieval banquets and private and corporate events. Regular events are also staged in the venue's workshop, including bread making and dinner party cooking.
