Wright Brothers Oyster & Porter House
British

11 Stoney Street, Borough Market, South East London, SE1 9AD

The overflowing and lively open-front bar of Wright Brothers Oyster & Porter House on the edge of Borough Market is difficult to pass without wanting to stop for at least a glass of wine and half a dozen fresh oysters. The barrel tables lining the pavement immediately catch your eye and set the scene for the classic and tastefully designed restaurant sitting behind. The Oyster & Porter House is both romantic and relaxed, instantly airing a distinct passion for good quality food and wine. It is the perfect location for a meeting, a quick drink, or a leisurely evening meal in the last of the summer sunshine. The emphasis in this bar is on fresh, quality food.
The menu is small yet confident and is displayed listed on blackboards hung above the open kitchen. The specials board changes regularly and it is evident that the quality of ingredients is of the highest importance. The food is without fault. The Colchester oysters, on the waiter's recommendation, were deliciously fresh and beautifully presented. We felt immediately comfortable - and rather chic - sitting at the wooden bar that stretches the length of the restaurant, on solid wooden bar stools. The staff are extremely attentive and prompt; sociable and knowledgeable when needed. With a full cellar in view, their wine list is impressive and offered a wide range of options.
The star dish for me was the special of Provençal scallops - incredibly fresh, they simply melted in the mouth. Served in a perfectly seasoned Provençal sauce, and accompanied by a small green salad, the texture and delicate flavours were divine. The razor clams were another particularly tasty option; served with chorizo, broad beans and chickpeas. The creme brulée was a deliciously light finale and was complemented excellently by a smooth dessert wine.
A charming atmosphere coupled with delicious, unpretentious fresh food, all within an intimate and beautifully designed interior, is a winning combination. I will be, and already have been, recommending this place to anyone who will listen.
