Stashed away in a residential area known as The Alberts, a trendy backwater just off the main road that heads towards Sheen and Putney, you'll find the idyll that is The White Horse.
The menu provides a visual and gastronomic feast, with dishes ranging from decadent braised quails in a raisin sauce to comforting spicy hot Mexican sausages. You'll also find a brunch selection featuring a smoked salmon option, and a number of tempting sandwiches if you're not in the market for a full feast. From the main à la carte menu, start with beef carpaccio with rocket leaves, Parmesan, black pepper and olive oil, before moving on to honey-glazed tiger prawns with chorizo, sweet peppers, crispy red onions and new potatoes. Dessert is an equally indulgent affair with options such as the amaretto creme brûlée and a refreshing selection of sorbets.
At The White Horse there is as much emphasis placed on providing an excellent selection of drinks as there is on serving fantastic food. Before a meal, or just because you can, try a classic Tom Collins or Kir Royal from the selection of cocktails, or sip on a 'Pimpop' - Pimms No.1 over pomegranate juice - in the summer. If your preference is for grape-based refreshment, you will enjoy exploring the wine list, which includes a smattering of Champagnes and a dessert wine. But fear not, there are a healthy number of bottled beers and ales on tap for hop fans. Also to be enjoyed from the bar are the sharing plates - perfect for grazing - which offer the delicious likes of olives with feta, hummus, grilled vegetables and a selection of breads on a delicious vegetarian mezze platter.
The venue is a popular haunt with locals - always a good sign - and its proximity to the High Street means it is easily accessible for visitors to the Richmond area. With affordable prices and a sophisticated menu, this is my first choice for lunchtime respite or a more languid evening with friends.
