Inside the five-star Corinthia Hotel London lies the majestic Massimo Restaurant & Bar, adorned with sleek mahogany and elegant marble. This restaurant oozes bygone glamour, and the modern and classic Italian fare is executed with aplomb.
Surrounded by opulence and elegance, we tucked into our starters of Parmigiana di melanzane – smoked aubergine topped with provolone and creamy Parmigiana – and fantastic beef Carpaccio with black truffle, which was grated at the table by the chef himself. Both were absolutely sublime. Although there were plenty of tempting fish and meat options, my dining companion and I plumped for pasta for the main event, having been reliably informed that the dishes were inspired by authentic Neapolitan cuisine. We certainly made the right decision. My cappellacci parcels filled with pumpkin and amaretto liqueur were fantastically rich, while the delicious-looking homemade chestnut tagliatelle opposite me, with wild mushrooms, was a sensation.
We let the sommelier choose wine to complement our dishes and his choices were unfalteringly good. To finish (and to extend our stay a little longer) we indulged in a bitter chocolate mousse flavoured with mint and chilli and accompanied by sweet wine from Naples, of course. Smooth, silky and deliciously decadent, it was a fitting finale to a memorable evening.
