Charismatic, urbane and refreshingly novel, The Light has exploited its history as a former electric light station to maximum effect. Occupying an enviable spot between City and Shoreditch, it boasts a minimalist design which is accented by sleek industrial touches; think modern, low-level lighting, exposed beams and eye-catching steel. However, a distinct effortlessness prevails, which means The Light's mixed bag of clientele - which included business folk, young city-dwellers and couples on the particular evening of our visit - feel comfortable and at ease within its exposed-brick walls.
The vibrant atmosphere spills outside into the alfresco dining area, as does the quirky decor, in the form of playful modern artwork. Choosing to dine in the courtyard, beautiful views of the city's skyscrapers, including Broadgate Tower where Skyfall was filmed, were afforded. Our attentive and affable waitress quickly delivered our appetiser, which the menu described as a broccoli and Parmesan coffee. A flavoursome soup, wonderfully presented in a coffee cup alongside two pieces of lightly toasted bread which were placed on the saucer to resemble biscuits, was a playful surprise and a telling beginning to our meal.
This sense of culinary innovation continued throughout the ensuing courses. For my main, I simply had to sample the chef's signature dish - grilled rare-breed 8oz rump steak with whole roasted garlic and peppercorn sauce. The steak was cooked with precision and as a result arrived pleasingly juicy and succulent. This dish perfectly illustrated The Light's approach to food and gave weight to their philosophy of sourcing the freshest seasonal ingredients from local producers. My companion chose to sample a range of offerings from across the culinary spectrum by choosing the meat platter. This consisted of mini hamburgers, marinated chicken wings, sausages, crunchy coleslaw and chilli beans; all well-presented and generously portioned. We paired our mains with a glass of the intense house red, although the list provides an ample selection of interesting Old and New World options.
