The trio behind the acclaimed Bistrot d'Amis have responded to popular demand by opening this second venue, located near Smithfield Market. Chabrot Bistrot Des Halles may have been born from the same vision and values as its established sister restaurant, but it sets itself very much apart with its own unique character and style.
The dining room is a light and airy space, with an open kitchen allowing guests a glimpse of all the culinary goings-on. The menu is just about as French as it gets: it's written in the native language - with helpful English translations, we were pleased to find - and features exactly the kind of simple, hearty cuisine that's served in the traditional bistros of Southern France. The cured meats and starters double up as tapas-style dishes, so you can make your meal as sociable and gastronomically varied as you wish. For the main course, you can look forward to unfussy, quality dishes, such as corn-fed baby chicken served with lemon and chilli, roasted spiced shoulder of lamb accompanied by herb couscous, and delicate grilled Dover sole, prepared with refreshing simplicity.
It will probably come as no surprise to learn that the accompanying drinks menu provides accurately matched wines to complement the à la carte's culinary offerings. The inclusive list represents a number of French regions and contains several by-the-glass options
