Rose & Crown
Pubs and Bars with Restaurants

22 High Street, Essendon, Hatfield, AL9 6HW

The Davis family take great pride in keeping The Rose & Crown clean and comfortable. Everything from the oak furniture to the earthy colour scheme feels homely and welcoming.
The essential ingredient in the cooking here is local produce. The menu is a celebration of old-fashioned English fayre. Devotion to freshness is clearly expressed in its most frequent phrase 'of the day'.
A selection of sandwiches, salads and jackets make a tasty light lunch, or there is a vast array of hearty courses on offer, including favourites like liver and bacon, scampi, and bangers and mash.
Suppers in the spacious restaurant are beautifully presented. Guests can begin with starters such as melon and Parma ham or carrot and coriander soup. As a staunch meat-lover, I was then tempted by prime steak or grilled loin of lamb, but even I couldn't resist the heavenly roasted vegetable tart. Indulgent desserts round off a feast of pure pleasure. The Rose & Crown is an example of everything that a traditional pub and restaurant should be and is perfect for a Sunday roast. Eating here makes a drive in the Hertfordshire countryside really special.
