The Docklands of Essex may not be the first place that comes to mind for a pub-lunch jaunt or evening out, but a trip to The Ship might just change your thinking. This is just the place for whiling away a few hours, sampling good honest British food and drink.
The Ship Carvery is situated on the A126, a short drive from historic Tilbury Fort, and offers a fantastic carvery from Monday to Saturday. Carvery prices start at just £6.50 and you can get a full-blown threecourse meal for an astonishing £11.99. You'll be hard pressed to find such a reasonably priced selection of the finest cuts of locally supplied meats elsewhere. Steve, The Ship's faithful chef of 26 years, encourages diners to sample a good selection, and you can make return visits for extra helpings of vegetables.
To start, my partner chose the flavoursome barbecued chicken wings, which came with a crispy side salad. My choice was potato wedges with cheese and bacon - crisp and utterly tasty. Next came the trip to the generous carvery - I chose turkey, possibly the hardest meat to cook because of its tendency to be dry, and was delighted to find that it was wonderfully moist and mouthwatering. I then loaded my plate with fresh and homely peas, potatoes, sweetcorn, carrots, and some deliciously sweet roasted vegetables. A perfectly-risen Yorkshire pudding with rich gravy completed a hearty meal. My partner opted for scampi, chips, peas and a side salad from the main menu, which he declared 'divine'. He couldn't resist his old favourite, treacle sponge and custard, for dessert, which he consumed in reverent silence; while I demolished a slice of chocolate fudge cake - which was, needless to say, wickedly indulgent.
The pub offers a fine selection of beverages, with a fabulous beer garden which hosts a yearly autumn beer festival and summertime barbecues; each Friday there is also a DJ to add to the vibrant atmosphere. With its simple home-cooked food, served by friendly staff, The Ship Carvery has an unpretentious 'Sunday' atmosphere every day of the week.
