The Bicycle

Bar-Restaurant

0.5 miles
Crow Lane, Clacton-on-Sea, CO16 9AP

A central meeting point between Colchester, Clacton and Frinton, The Bicycle holds all the credentials to entice locals from all three, as well as from much further afield, through its doors. Opened by Kerry and Brian in 2014, the venue’s popularity has steadily grown thanks to its modern decor and relaxing atmosphere, along with a devotion to great service and attention to detail. The 350-year-old building boasts exposed beams and red brick walls, contrasted by neutral tones and tasteful cycling paraphernalia that pays homage to the venue’s name.

Chefs Tom and Gary make a formidable force in the kitchen, with their cooking styles coming together harmoniously to create the most sumptuous of dishes. Award-winning chef, Tom opts predominantly for modern flavours, while Gary goes for the more traditional. Many dishes on the menu demonstrate this wonderful marriage of influences, such as the scallops with pea and mint purée. Complimented by serrano ham shards, the fusion of old and new touches results in the perfect combination on the palate. Other sumptuous offerings from the talented duo include courgette flower in tempura batter with cream cheese, chilli and fresh herbs, and the option to create your own fish dish. Be sure to save room for dessert, though. The hibiscus pot is massively popular with regulars, and is wonderfully presented with a vibrant and fruity raspberry coulis. This careful presentation is mirrored in the hand-picking of suppliers, with only the best produce that East Anglia has to offer making it on to The Bicycle’s tables.

Such magnificent fare is rightly paired with an ample array of high-quality drinks. The Bicycle boasts an extensive list of 28 gins from around the world, discovered on the team’s travels. Both Verdant and Amber Inverroche gins are just a couple of the exquisite names on the list, while the choice of wine is equally reputable.

Kerry and Brian take much pride in the fact that their guests feel relaxed and comfortable during their visit and often stay long into the night. With such an impressive blend of mouth-watering food and eclectic drink, it’s easy to see why The Bicycle is such a hit.
