Thackeray's Restaurant

Macdonald Bush Hotel, The Borough, Farnham, GU9 7NN

The Macdonald Bush Hotel offers the style and service of a 17th century coaching inn gilded with modern elegance. If it's unsurpassed quality and charm you're after, look no further than this leading venue.
Settle in to the oak-beamed Coachman's bar for a candlelit drink, where a log fire crackles in a centuries-old fireplace. In fine weather, guests make for the courtyard patio, where tables perch on ancient cobblestones. Wherever you go, you'll find every modern comfort with service that is attentive but unobtrusive, in a comfortable and relaxing setting.
When we arrived for dinner, we were shown through to the Oak lounge before we went through to Thackeray's Restaurant. This wood-panelled room, with its 17th century murals, is the perfect place to meet or relax at any time of day. Indeed, light refreshments are always available. The staff are knowledgeable and take pride in ensuring that you experience the best they have to offer.
Moving through to the Georgian elegance of Thackeray's, we couldn't help being impressed by the classically beautiful chandeliers and rich drapes. It was a warm late summer's evening, and the views of the gardens were unbeatable. With its high ceilings and crisp table linen, it makes a perfect choice for either formal or informal dining.
All this made the right impression for the à la carte food that followed. My starter of feta cheese and spinach bouche, served with a crunchy onion and tomato salad, and my partner's crab ravioli, served with bisque sauce and citrus cream, met our high expectations. These were followed by forestiere chicken with wild mushrooms, bacon cream jus, sauté potatoes and pepper; and herb-crusted salmon, which came with ginger noodles and a mussel broth. The dishes were beautifully presented and tasted superb.
The chef really excelled himself in the pudding department: a fantastic honey and cinnamon parfait, the taste of summer captured in lavender ice cream.
You can choose from the table d'h'te menu (£24.50 per person). A range of seasonal packages, including Christmas and New Year deals, as well as gourmet events are available throughout the year.
The Macdonald Bush Hotel is a special place and comes with my highest recommendation. Once visited, you'll be seduced and will want to return over and over again. And you can be sure that each time you do, you'll receive the warmest of welcomes.
