The King Harry
Pubs and Bars with Restaurants

2 King Harry Lane, St Albans, AL3 4BL

What a pleasure it is to find that places like this still exist. The King Harry is a good old-fashioned pub with lovely wood floors, mismatched tables and chairs and squashy sofas where you can sit in true comfort with a pint of good ale and the papers.
The outstanding pub menu offers everything from sandwiches to delicious Sunday roasts and unique daily specials. Although tempted by the delicious sharing boards, we chose to sample mushrooms on rye toast with Stilton cream which offered a subtle blend of wonderful flavours. The salt-and-pepper-squid with lime mayonnaise was also simply gorgeous. We'd particularly recommend the ox cheek and red wine pie with buttered kale and mash - a straightforward dish, superbly cooked. The handmade cheeseburger was another excellent main, made all the better by the fact only the best of British meat was used. All dishes are freshly prepared on the premises, and knowledgeable and friendly staff are happy to offer advice on a huge choice of Continental beers and a well-thought-out selection of wines. Next time we visit, I'll try the beef tomato stuffed with quinoa, beetroot and horseradish and served with hazelnut and potato salad, which is probably the most interesting vegetarian option I've ever seen on a pub menu. All in all, a very welcoming spot well worth seeking out.
