The Fluer De Lys, 1 French Row, St Albans, AL3 5DU
There are three Snug bars in the Chilterns area - in St Albans, Hertford and High Wycombe - and all of them live up to their name. Each one boasts a multitude of cosy corners for guests to get comfy in, perhaps while enjoying one of the signature cocktails, a pint of beer or one of The Snug's renowned homemade burgers. We visited the Snug bar in the Fleur de Lys, a 16th-Century pub nestled in historic St Albans.
This beautiful building blends the old and the new, with lots of quiet nooks and crannies to tuck yourself into and enjoy some fantastic food and drink. The bar staff are fully trained in their craft. The cocktail menu is incredible, and the happy hour between 3pm and 7pm each day is particularly popular. A pleasing wine list offers some great choices, with prices starting at £5 a glass, although there are options to push the boat out and treat yourself as well, including the rather special Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque Champagne.
Visit early for the tempting breakfast menu, delivering a full English breakfast, muffins or eggs Benedict at extremely palatable prices. For lunch, perhaps share a tasty platter with a friend, or choose from a variety of delicious paninis served with homemade coleslaw and skinny fries. Our evening meal started with a huge plate of Snug nachos smothered in melted cheese, jalapeños, salsa, guacamole and sour cream, followed by two amazing burgers, which are homemade daily. It was a hard decision, but in the end I plumped for the bacon cheeseburger with back bacon and mature Cheddar (a popular choice according to the bartender) and my partner opted for the New Yorker (pickles, fried onion and mature Cheddar). Delicious.
The menu also offered favourites such as a mixed grill, rack of ribs and steak and chips, as well as spicy options like the sizzling fajitas. I'll definitely be ordering the fish-finger sandwich, made with whole fillets of battered hoki, on my next visit. As well as such fantastic food and drink offerings, The Snug also sells gift vouchers for wine classes run by a sommelier, as well as exciting cocktail classes - great for group celebrations.
