Distinctly different and thoroughly charming, Kamillos Restaurant in St Albans offers a refreshing break from the old dining routine. Exquisite Italian fare is the name of the game at this St Albans favourite.
The charismatic Kamillo is at the helm, providing his loyal following of regulars with a menu that holds creativity in abundance, and enough Mediterranean flavour to convince you that you've hopped over to Italy for a few hours. Comprising three main areas, each of which offers its own distinct dining experience, Kamillos is spacious, freshly styled, light and comfortable - everything a setting needs to make eating out a real pleasure. Choose the main dining area and you'll be right in the hubbub, able to take in the buzzing atmosphere and watch the chefs at work in the
open kitchen. The sight of the traditional pizza oven and the aroma of its smoking beechwood will instantly make a meal forerunner - but don't make your mind up too quickly.
Prompt service with a genuine smile is guaranteed, making the decision-making process an absolute pleasure. Starters are authentic and tempting. My personal choice is always the Camembert fritti - deep fried and served with a tart cranberry sauce, it exemplifies decadence. Classic options include bruschetta and melanzane alla Parmigiana - a glorious combination of aubergines, tomato sauce, mozzarella and Parmesan baked to a meltingly delicious finish. For your main course, you can select from pasta dishes, those pizzas I mentioned and house specials like the agnello all a menta in aceto balsamico - tender lamb in a light white wine sauce with balsamic vinegar and fresh mint, served with mashed potatoes.
The second of the aforementioned areas is the lovely mezzanine, which is perfect for parties and gatherings. It overlooks the main restaurant, so you are able to enjoy your privacy while still feeling part of the action below. Lastly, the garden and al fresco eating area are perfect for soaking up a few rays when the British summer is in full swing. Add a glass of crisp Frascati to proceedings and you'll feel a thousand miles away.
It's about the whole experience at Kamillos, from its convenient location, close to the city centre, exquisite presentation of dishes and superb ingredients, to the excellent service from a dedicated team. Kamillos is my first choice for Mediterranean dining in St Albans
