If you’re out shopping in St Albans and are looking for a spot of brunch or a coffee, the George Street Canteen is a must-visit. The café is tucked away in a tranquil courtyard and, while close to the city centre, it feels a million miles away from the bustling town.
Enjoy views of the cathedral from an al fresco spot, or choose to sit indoors, in the light and airy café. A warm welcome is guaranteed, too, at what was named the most family-friendly venue at the St Albans and Harpenden Food and Drink Awards 2016.
The menu, featuring locally sourced produce, is brimming with tasty breakfast and lunch options that are served all day. The George Street Club caught my eye – a triple-toasted sandwich packed with smoked back bacon, chicken, egg, tomato, rocket and mayonnaise. The homemade slaw that accompanied it was a delight. I also couldn’t resist ordering a side of baked sweet potato wedges, which came with a sour cream and chive dip. My dining partner plumped for the halloumi wrap – a toasted tortilla stuffed with halloumi, roasted peppers, couscous and rocket. There are plenty of warm baked goodies from brownies to muffins to round off any meal, or to enjoy as a standalone treat with a perfectly brewed cup of coffee and maybe a good book.
