Previously two cottages dating back to 1608, The White Horse was converted into a public house in 1713. While from the outside it looks like a quintessential olde-worlde inn, inside you'll find a marriage of modern and traditional, with aged wooden beams looking down onto contemporary furnishings. The menu reflects this mix: hearty classics sit alongside the Black Rock Grill, a new dining concept where meat or fish is served on slabs of hot volcanic rock and left to sizzle before your eyes. This exciting experience is even better when enjoyed in the pub's spacious garden, which boasts a play area and pets corner to keep the little ones amused.
I couldn't resist trying the Black Rock mixed grill, which on that day included sirloin steak, chicken and lamb with rosemary. The super-hot rock sealed in the meat's lovely natural juices, creating a rich, deep flavour. And, not only is it incredibly tasty, but healthy too; the meat is trimmed of all excess fat and no oil is used in the cooking process. My companion chose a main of beef medallions with Café de Paris sauce - succulent fillet steak pan-fried with butter, garlic, paprika and brandy. The White Horse team can expertly cater for any celebration and, with fare like this on offer, I've no doubt any event hosted here will be an absolute success
