This 18th-Century inn has metamorphosed into a unique and elegant dining venue while retaining a local pub atmosphere. Regular events, such as music, poker and quiz evenings, add to the community feel, while the outside children's play area lets guests know that this is a family-friendly establishment.
Polite, attentive staff; exquisitely presented, locally sourced food; and an extensive wine list make this a cut above the conventional gastropub - it is no surprise to learn it's a finalist in The Derbyshire Food and Drink Awards. From the sophisticated menu we chose the perfect runny Scotch egg with chutney; and tender scallops served with crispy pork, artichoke purée and prawn samosa. I followed this with succulent chunks of duck breast with blood orange potato fondant, spicy carrot purée, blackberries and sherry vinegar jus, which demonstrated the great level of care taken to serve seasonal ingredients at their best. My companion relished his wild sea bass with Parmentier potatoes and salt-baked celeriac, bathed in a burnt apple purée, reminiscent of caramel. The desserts tasted every bit as good as they looked. The creamy panna cotta combined perfectly with the tangy damson and lime jelly, granola and mint syrup, to produce a dessert that tantalised and surprised in equal measure. I enjoyed not just 'peaches and cream', but peach parfait, toasted almond cream, raspberries and lemon creme fraiche sorbet.
The less adventurous won't be disappointed. A large party was tucking into soup followed by traditional steak and chips, and there is a range of tasty lunchtime sandwiches to try. Urban chic with provincial prices - visit The Wingerworth Pub & Kitchen before everyone discovers it.
