Situated in the heart of Lincoln's bustling Bailgate, Café Zoot remains unpretentious and thoroughly at home amongst its historic surroundings. In what could so easily have been another trendy wine bar, home cooking returns with a bang. One of the few restaurants in the area to remain open all day, Café Zoot serves a complete menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Once comfortably seated you'll find yourself choosing from a wide and varied menu. The recommended mushroom and sun-blushed tomato paté with garlic and herb mayonnaise and crostini was a tasty treat to whet the appetite - a really special dish - whilst my guest sampled the bruschetta. I can't thank the knowledgeable staff enough for their delicious suggestions. The main event came in the form of meatballs in a rich tomato sauce on a bed of tagliatelle finished with Parmesan shavings - a hearty, satisfying and generous portion.
What further adds to the atmosphere here is the beauty of the immediate area. Myths and legends abound with the city's cathedral and castle just down the road - it is quite a treat to sit at the bay window and watch the world go by. Add to all of this great value for money and you'll begin to understand the success of this establishment. Special offers include a lunchtime starter and main course for only £6.95 per person, and in the evening you can enjoy a two-course meal for only £9.95.
Café Zoot enjoys quite a reputation in Lincoln and in my opinion it is thoroughly deserved. Whether you're popping in for a coffee, booking a private party in the upstairs dining area or languidly indulging in a three-course meal, you will not be disappointed.
