The Old Eyre Arms

The Old Eyre Arms occupies pride of place in the charming village of Hassop. This traditional country pub is a haven for even the most discerning foodies, offering classic British fare with a twist, and provides a relaxed space in which to enjoy casual drinks. This delightful establishment was recently taken over by Lee and Sian. Lee’s enthusiasm is infectious as he tells us of his plans to refine this delightful pub. Inside, exposed beams, stonework and open fires are complemented by vintage features. Add in a very warm welcome, a well-kept beer garden, and a relaxed atmosphere and you have the measure of this gem of a place.

Fresh local produce is at the heart of The Old Eyre Arms’ offering, and the menu is built around simple flavours that really allow these high-quality ingredients to shine. My evening began with succulent scallops with black pudding, pancetta and pea purée, while my dining partner enjoyed homemade terrine with chutney and toasted brioche. The scallops were cooked to perfection and the dish was delightfully balanced. To follow we chose roasted cod loin served with sautéed potatoes, samphire and king prawns, and delicious pea and mint risotto – both dishes were simply outstanding. As well as breathing new life into the pub, Lee and Sian also run Doughology, a successful pizza catering company based in a bespoke trailer. Doughology is available at The Old Eyre Arms every Wednesday and is well worth a visit. Lee was keen for us to try the pizzas and how could we resist? With little room left, we shared the mouth-watering truffle hunter featuring ham hock, Portobello mushrooms, truffle oil and homemade San Marzano tomato sauce – absolute perfection.

Sunday lunches are another popular affair, offering the likes of roast beef, lamb and chicken with amazing Yorkshire puddings. For those after a quality tipple, this wonderful establishment has a selection of local real ale and an extensive wine and gin list. Lee, Sian and their fantastic team thoroughly deserve every success coming their way, as they take this charming pub from strength to strength. Treat yourself to a visit soon.
