Red Lion Inn
Pubs and Bars with Restaurants

Main Street, Birchover, Nr. Matlock, DE4 2BN

The Red Lion Inn is a traditional pub with a difference. A lovely old building, circa 1680, the Red Lion has all the trappings of a classic English country inn. There are ancient oak beams, bare stone walls, warming open fires and a pleasant patio for summer days. The original water source for this one-time brewhouse is a 30-foot well that can be found in the bar area. So you see, there's interest and comfort to be found in every corner of this Birchover pub. The aforementioned difference lies in the menu offered by owners Matteo and Alyson.
Matteo and Alyson have been heading up proceedings at the Red Lion since 2006, taking over the pub with an aim to provide quality food at reasonable prices. Chef Matteo has ploughed all his passion for the cuisine of his Sardinian homeland into creating a menu that blends pub-style dishes with Mediterranean flourishes and uses produce from the surrounding Derbyshire countryside. To source from the locale was an obvious choice for Matteo, given the plethora of excellent locally grown, reared and made ingredients available to him. His own creativity extends to making his own cheese and other menu staples such as black pudding, brown sauce, butter, pickles, cured meats and bread, much of which is available to purchase from the Red Lion deli. This dynamic couple is always on the lookout for new challenges - I believe plans for an on-site microbrewery are in the pipeline.
At the bar you'll find a good selection of locally brewed ales, wines and lagers, as well as bar nibbles, like homemade Scotch eggs. A meal at the Red Lion might begin with Sardinian antipasto - a selection of cured meat, cheese, olives and bread - or homemade mozzarella with fresh tomato on garlic bruschetta. Main courses range from pub favourites like a homemade burger to gnocchi Sardi with wild boar and tomato sauce, topped with fresh pecorino. To finish, there's a wonderful sticky toffee pudding with toffee sauce and ice cream, sprinkled with honeycomb. Regular events - such as dedicated Sardinian nights, quizzes and various weekly £5 meal nights - keep things exciting and pocket friendly
