Replete with soaring ceilings and sweeping stairs, Opulence is the very epitome of grandeur and glamour, and has even served Her Majesty The Queen. The vast lobby leads into an intimate cocktail bar, where you'll find handsome beverages with a fruity bite alongside spicy mixed nuts and plump, taut olives. The upstairs dining hall - once a courtroom - boasts wood-panelled walls offset with bold, contemporary wallpaper and luxuriant drapes. A sense of history and gravitas is lightened by the friendly, bright staff, who are passionate about the food and drinks they serve. Striking, delicate orchids of assorted shade and size, set on various tables, help conjure a sense of occasion.
The pride of the staff is far from misplaced, as the fare is simply exquisite. I started with wild mushroom tortellini while my partner opted for parsnip soup with pheasant sausage - rich and evocative of cosy winter nights. The main event was tender roast quail, wrapped in crispy smoked bacon to create perfectly paced textures and garnished with tastebud-tingling soused cabbage and cider sauce.
Dessert was promptly presented, much to my delight. The decadent hot chocolate fondant I had selected, accompanied by white chocolate tuile and creamy banana ice cream, was truly an inspired combination. This came as no surprise, as everything at Opulence was really quite magnificent and utterly deserving of its name. Don't miss the succulent Sunday roast or the lovely afternoon tea, served up six days a week.
