The George Inn is a stunning grade-II-listed pub that dates back to the 14th Century, situated in the historic South Downs village of Alfriston. Upon entering the inn, you will find yourself surrounded by rustic furniture and above your head is a hop-clad, heavily-beamed ceiling. Over the years, many a weary traveller has taken shelter from the cold winter months beside the inglenook fireplace and indulged in local dishes such as marinated rump of Sussex lamb with herb and garlic sauce and Dauphinois potatoes.
From the lunch menu share a rustic board laden with breads, hummus, tzatziki, anchovies, warm oil and balsamic vinegar, roasted garlic bulb, feta cheese and mixed olives. And from the dinner menu, sample the chicken stuffed with Gorgonzola and spinach, wrapped in prosciutto. For dessert, try molten chocolate cake with black cherries, or the creme brûlée of the day. The inn boasts a peaceful flint-walled beer garden, where events such as barbecues and weddings often take place in the summer. There are also six recently refurbished, luxury bedrooms, all of which are en-suite and have oak beams, antique furniture and sleigh beds.
