In the historic market town of Dorking, at the foot of the rolling North Downs, sits the listed building that houses The Spotted Dog – a traditional pub at the heart of its community. Thought to have been a public house since about 1830, The Spotted Dog has character in abundance and boasts a spectacular lawned garden to the rear – the views to Ranmore Common are quite something. The mostly local patronage meet here for hearty lunches and a catch-up over a pint of ale. Look to the weekly changing specials board and opt for cock-a-leekie pie served with bubble and squeak, or perhaps a rump steak and onion sandwich with chips is more your thing. The main menu features classic pub staples like ham served with egg and chips, although there are of course baguettes, sandwiches, panini and jackets for lighter bites; but for something extra special, be sure to visit for Sunday lunch – the post-meal live jazz just adds further appeal to an already pretty pleasing picture.
