The Empress of Blandings is a warm and welcoming venue nestled near the national attraction of the New Forest. This peaceful respite, named in homage to P.G Wodehouse’s fictional pig, offers rustic charm, contemporary dining and exceptional cuisine in a picturesque setting. What’s more, quality Hall & Woodhouse ales are stocked behind the bar.
To begin, my flaked mackerel pâté from the specials board was rich, creamy and perfected by a pinch of peppery rocket. Spread across crusty bread with sweet pear chutney, it was a starter that sent me straight to dining heaven. My dining partner enjoyed crispy potato skins stuffed with mature Cheddar and baked in a smoky barbecue sauce. His assurances it was delicious were supported by his empty plate. Mains soon followed. My pan-fried calf’s liver arrived with a side of streaky bacon, buttered mash and caramelised onion marmalade. Opposite me, the house signature award-winning steak and Tanglefoot ale pie was an inventive take on a classic. The crisp, golden pastry and the tender steak and rich gravy were a match made in heaven. I’d suggest that you leave room for a mini pud. We plumped for zesty lemon meringue and a refreshing fruit crumble – both were surprisingly light but thoroughly satisfying.
The menu is so varied that there’s something to suit everyone. There’s a dedicated children’s menu for the little ones and ample choice for vegetarians. Plentiful parking and a lovely garden top off a delightful drinking and dining venue.
