There can’t be a huge number of Chinese restaurants located in listed buildings, but Summer Palace sits in a beautiful curved stone terrace at the top of Llandaff High Street, close to the cathedral and opposite the medieval gatehouse of the bishop’s palace. We chose to sit in the ground-floor dining room, where we were surrounded by happy diners, many of them regulars. After munching through a basket of prawn crackers, we shared a selection of starters including lettuce rolls packed with minced meat, veg and noodles, succulent Pekinese spare ribs, spring rolls and crispy seaweed. These were followed by delicious mains of sweet and sour pork, stir-fried chicken with broccoli and ginger, fried crispy shredded beef in spicy red wine sauce, special fried rice and, in my case, a couple of Tsingtao beers. Mr Chim and his hard-working and friendly staff provided us with a first-class Chinese meal and a very enjoyable evening.
