Pentre Gwilym House sits on the outskirts of Cardiff in the delightful suburb of Thornhill. Recently refurbished in November 2007, this public house and restaurant has facilities in abundance. The parking is extensive, which is always a welcome surprise, and there is a huge heated outdoor seating area for dining alfresco. Families have their own dedicated area, so there’s no excuse not to bring everyone. There’s even a soft-play venue and outside play area to keep the little ones amused, which is open until 8pm, giving adults plenty of time to enjoy a top-notch meal and relax. However, Pentre Gwilym is by no means an exclusively family environment, and is supported by its separate adults-only dining section. A pool table, beer garden and wireless internet access ensures that this venue is just as appealing to groups without children.

The beautiful old building is vast, seating up to 150 diners, and has a wonderfully modern refurbished interior. Its traditional pub atmosphere envelopes you with its welcoming feel. After you’ve inspected the menu, simply order at the bar – an ideal opportunity to sample some of the varied and fairly-priced beverages. Main courses range between £6 and £9 and most are offered on a permanent two-for-one basis – fantastic value no matter how large your party. The choices span English, Indian, Italian and Chinese cuisines supplemented with several side dishes and starters. After being seated I was soon tucking into a generously-sized starter of pan-fried smoked haddock and mozzarella cake served on salad. A succulent sirloin steak followed, cooked expertly and served with onion rings, grilled tomato and a jacket potato. Finally, a dessert of Italian profiteroles filled with a naughty chocolate cream and served with ice cream left me feeling full to bursting.

Our fellow diners on the next table raved about Pentre Gwillym’s great value and tasty food – they have returned several times since the refurbishment. I can see myself becoming a regular and look forward to sampling their popular Sunday roast sometime very soon.
